Grey eyes gaze at the swaddled babe, a father's look of pride. His words return time and again, obligation indelibly impressed upon Draco like ink on ancient parchment.

These words he remembers as he stands before the woman he barely knows. Blue eyes lift to his, a stranger's look of trepidation.

"I bind myself to you for the eternity of our days."

Green eyes seek his from the crowd, a lover's look of regret. It weighs heavily on his heart, but can never be as burdensome as what he's known since birth.

"You are a Malfoy."

I know, it's heartbreaking, isn't it? But I have trouble seeing how Draco would ever be able to completely break free of it, no matter how much things changed after the war. I was just saying to my beta that I'm really glad my parents never expected anything of me!
