Feigning boredom through the Sorting was easy enough. The new Slytherins, their surnames entwined through generations of blood and marriage, were no surprise. Schooled in each's particular weakness and loyalties owed, Draco was prepared to reenact his father's machinations ad nauseum.
And bored.
But something—someone—belied his apathy. His gaze landed on the nearby table, his pride still stinging from cutting words, a discovery unexpected as glittering gemstones secreted inside a worn geode.
"I think I can tell who the wrong sort are for myself, thanks."
Yes. This was new.
Intrigued, a tiny part of Draco's jaded eleven-year-old soul glittered back.
