"You know what I think? I think you're not such an honest person. Because I've followed you for eight weeks now and I never once saw you order anything but a fucking seabreeze!"
Lisa clutched helplessly at the relentless hands on her throat. "I can't breathe... I can't breathe," she gasped, a fear gripping her as tightly as the hands on her throat that these could be her last words. And oh, all the things she had left to say, if this handsome and all-too-familiar stranger hadn't come into her life. About how she wanted to take time out for herself but had buried herself in her work because that was safer, because that didn't give her time to think about a knife at her throat in a dark parking lot. About all the things that she liked, that she did, that she thought – those things that she'd never had the time to explain to anyone, fearing that they wouldn't understand her. She could take care of other people, but she couldn't take care of herself.
But as she felt her lifeforce slipping away, she knew she would never get a chance to say any of this. Jackson's hands were on her slim throat, his thumbs too forcefully caressing her epiglottis, his fingers crushing her windpipe as surely as the crush of a lover's body, her consciousness slipping out through one last gasp ...
And then her captor did the unexpected – something he wasn't even fully aware he was doing until he was in the middle of it, and then it was just too good to stop. He was kissing Lisa. No, he was devouring Lisa ...
With that kiss he felt something stirring inside him – something that he hadn't felt since that long-ago day that he saw his father throw a bag of kittens into the river. Was it ... humanity? "Lisa," he said, as shimmering tears welled up in his eyes, like a bathtub left filling for too long. "I'm ... I'm sorry, Lisa ... I'm sorry I've hurt you." He took her hand – not in a painful grip like before, but gently, as if it was just the start of getting to know her body more intimately than he had ever known anyone before.
"I know all about you, Lisa. And sure, it's because I was paid to find out about you. But I paid attention. I know you like Seabreezes. I know you never leave work until everybody else is gone, and that you walk alone to your car. I know you don't have time for anybody in your life." He added hopefully, "But maybe you'll have time for me?"
"He understands me!" Lisa thought, ecstasy brightening her eyes in the dim light of the airplane toilet. It was everything she'd ever dreamed – someone who paid attention to her, someone who truly knew her, inside and out. Never mind that he was a stalker. Of course, that did bring up an awkward situation. "But your friends? What will they say?"
Jackson shrugged as his lips brushed the thumb prints embedded on Lisa's throat. "They'll understand," he murmured. "Rocco just got married last month. Don't worry, I'll take care of it."
Lisa nodded as she wrapped her arms around Jackson's shoulders, pulling him close. He kissed her again, deeply, but then broke apart. "No ... this isn't right. I want this ... us ... to be perfect." He looked at Lisa, his blue orbs shining with unshed tears of happiness. "When we go back to sit down, I'll make another phone call – this time to the Hilton to book the honeymoon suite."
And they left the bathroom hand in hand, ready to begin their new life together.
